For the last couple of seasons birds have been everywhere as an interior design trend! Feathers sewn or printed on to scatter cushions, silhouettes of nightingales and humming birds on wallpaper and fabrics. Birdcages too as decorative objects or prints were all over the place. With Summer now well and truly over and all but the hardiest of our feathered friends flown off to warmer climes a different, animal is finding its way into our home décor: the horse.
This time last year, the big news was horned animals: faux hunting trophies adorned many a wall and in a variety of wonderful hues and textures from hot pink felt to mirror-like silvers. Deer and reindeer are still around this year in gorgeous Fair Isle throws and cushions but in a much more understated way than before. This is the season of the horse.
As a design motif, horses have been adorning fashion for a good while now. It's been at least two years since Stella McCartney's horse prints were on the catwalk. Since then they have found their way onto scarves as small scale repeating patterns and more boldly on knitwear. Now it's the turn of interiors.
There are some amazing horsey pieces out there. The trick is be subtle. You don't want to make any room look like your some kind of frenzied collector of all things equine but one or two objects here and there will make your scheme absolutely on trend. There is a horse for every room in the house.
Of course in the nursery or child's room a rocking horse will add a bit of nostalgic chic, but if your little darling or darlings have too small a room to accommodate such a large toy then a lovely cuddly pony will look just beautiful. This one is super cute and very stylish too. He would look equally at home in a boy's or girls room.

For the living room, combine the equine trend with lighting. This horse lamp will complement even the most neutral of colour schemes but sit equally well against a strong wall. If the chinoiserie influence that's currently in vogue in ceramics and carpentry is your thing then this proud looking beast could really be the horse for you.

For a real statement piece, look for something sculptural, perhaps a horse in motion. This handmade horse mannequin in washed wood is just dazzlingly beautiful from every conceivable angle. It's copper tail contrasts with the cool grey and white of his body to make this a real conversation piece in any room.

Of course art lovers have always been spoilt for choice if they love horses. Prints of hunting scenes or muscular sinuous steeds can be picked up at charity shops, flea markets and boot sales year round. Find a few in a similar style and hang them either neatly aligned as a series if they're all the same size and orientation – portrait as opposed to landscape looks best in this case – in matching fames, if not hang randomly with pictures of other subjects interspersed.
Ok, this last one is cheating a bit but, for the bathroom only the most watery of horse will do. Seahorses of course. They're on shower curtains, bath mats, tiles, accessories...the list is endless and they never go out of style! Were they ever in style?
